University Challenge

Open for submissions 16th May - 19th June

How it works

Welcome to The Phare

Welcome to our University Challenge.  Every quarter, The Phare invites creative writing students from one university to submit their work. The winning piece of short fiction, flash fiction and  the winning poem plus two runners up from each category will be published on our online magazine.

At the end of the year, one short fiction writer, one flash fiction writer and one poet from all our university winners will be nominated as our University Champions and will be invited to read their work on our podcast, have free entry to all future Phare submission windows, appear in our printed anthology and be invited to attend one of our future Phare Writing Retreat workshops for free.

This quarter, we are inviting the Open University to take part. We wish all students the very best of luck!

Entry is free for students. Here's how to submit:

  • There are a few things that will turn the The Phare's lights out; overtly transgressive, gratuitous violence and/or sex, religious intolerance, anything homophobic or racist. And sorry, we’re not the right place for YA or children’s literature.

  • By submitting your written work to The Phare Literary Magazine you are granting us non-exclusive rights to publish in our online journal at www.thephare.com and in any The Phare print journal or anthology.
