Submission Guidelines 

Submissions are now closed. 

Poetry: 40 lines

Flash Fiction: 1000 words max

Short Story: 2000 words max

 

Eligibility

  1. Entrants must be 18 years or over.

  2. An entry can only be made by the work’s individual author.

  3. Entries must not have been previously published in print or online, been broadcast or won a prize.

  4. Entries can be on any theme or subject but must be written in English.

  5. We do not accept submissions of work aimed at young adults or children.

  6. Simultaneous submissions are permitted. Should your fiction/poetry win a prize or be published elsewhere please email itsthephare@gmail.com so that we may remove your entry. Please note, entry fees are non-refundable.

  7. Authors retain full worldwide copyright throughout.

  8. No overtly transgressive, gratuitous violence and/or sex, religious intolerance, anything homophobic or racist.

 

Format

  1. Use a sensible font, 12 point. Double-spaced for fiction and creative non-fiction, single-spaced for poetry. 

  2. ​​Short fiction/flash/creative non-fiction format: please do not indent new paras or dialogue - just add appropriate line breaks. 

  3. Please  send your piece as a word document attachment. PLEASE DO NOT SEND IN PDF FORMAT.

  4. Entries will be judged anonymously so please do not put your name, address, telephone number, email or any personally identifying information on any page.

 

Submitting

  1. Enter via email to pharesubmissions@gmail.com once you have paid the entry fee.  In the body of the email please write your name, any social media handles and a short, third person 75-word bio. In the subject header state the name of your piece and whether it’s poetry, flash fiction or a short story.

  2. We do not accept postal entries.

  3. No major corrections or alternations can be made after entries have been submitted.

  4. Please forward your PayPal email receipt together with your entry(s) as proof of payment.

Submission Fee

£8 for one short story - £14 for two

£7 for one flash fiction - £12 for two

£6 for one poem - £10 for two.

 

 

There will be five free submissions for writers of reduced means. Please email itsthephare@gmail.com with details of your eligibility.

Prizes

Winners of each category will:

  • win £150

  • appear in our competition issue to launch March 2022.

  • be invited to record their entry for our Podcast page

  • take part in on-going publicity

Runners-up of each category will:

  • win £50

  • appear in our competition issue to launch March 2022.

  • take part in on-going publicity

​

Prizes will be paid through PayPal or direct bank transfer.

All winners, runners-up and long-listed will be published in The Phare’s competition issue in March 2022.

No correspondence can be entered into. Judges’ decisions are final.
